The scoop on sunscreens and why you need to wear one every day
It’s no secret that sunscreen is important. We’ve been hearing it since we were kids – slather on the SPF before heading outside, or risk getting a painful sunburn. But did you know that sunscreen is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer? Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can pass through clouds – so while you might not feel the heat of the sun on your skin, the UV rays can still cause damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, regular daily use of SPF sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40% and lower your melanoma risk by 50%. SPF protection will also help prevent premature skin aging, like wrinkles, sagging, and age spots.
At Healthy Complexions Spa, we sell a variety of high-quality, medical-grade SPF products that have you covered from head to toe. Just stop in to browse our products and find the best option for you.
What does SPF mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays will take to redden your skin if you apply the sunscreen exactly as directed compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So, if you use an SPF 30 product properly, it will take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen.
What level of SPF do you need?
We recommend using a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and applying a generous amount on all exposed areas. Regardless of the SPF, it’s important to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside and reapply every two hours.
Why should you use sunscreen?
⦁ Reduces your overall UV exposure
⦁ Lowers your risk of skin cancer and sun damage
⦁ Certain medications may cause photosensitivity, requiring more protection
⦁ Prevents premature aging of the skin
⦁ Helps maintain an even skin tone
